BASF’s India MDI Move: What Does It Signal for the Global PU Market?

On September 21, BASF announced that it is evaluating a potential MDI production complex in Dahej, Gujarat, India.

The company is already in an advanced feasibility study and has secured an industrial land parcel for the potential project. However, BASF has not yet made a final investment decision.

At first glance, this looks like another capacity-expansion story.

But the more important question is:

Why India, and why now?

BASF already operates MDI production facilities in the US, Europe, China and South Korea. A potential MDI complex in India would further expand its global production footprint and support a local-for-local supply model for India and neighboring markets.

For the market, this creates several questions worth monitoring:

1. Is India becoming a new strategic MDI demand center?

BASF cited strong expected demand across construction, refrigeration, automotive, furniture and other industries in India.

If local MDI demand continues to expand, multinational producers may increasingly consider local production rather than relying primarily on imports.

2. Could regional supply chains gradually change?

A new production base in India could eventually reduce dependence on imported MDI and change regional trade flows.

The impact would not necessarily be immediate. The more important signal is where producers are positioning their future capacity.

3. What does this mean for global MDI capacity discipline?

BASF is simultaneously completing its major MDI expansion in Geismar, US, while evaluating another potential investment in India.

For investors, this raises a broader question:

Are global producers entering another investment cycle — but with capacity increasingly aligned with regional demand?

That could matter for future utilization rates, trade flows, pricing power and capital allocation across the polyurethane value chain.

What to Watch Next

The next important signals are not necessarily another headline.

They are:

  • BASF's final investment decision in India

  • The potential scale and timing of the project

  • Regional MDI demand growth

  • Changes in Asian MDI trade flows

  • Capacity additions from other global producers

  • Regional price and utilization trends

One capacity announcement does not change the market overnight.

But it can provide an early signal of where major chemical producers believe future demand and competitive advantage may be located.

CHEMWI tracks these early market signals across chemicals and advanced materials — focusing on what changed, why it matters, and what to watch next.
